Today is World Water Day, a day that for years has been dedicated to the importance of responsible, sustainable water management. Because at a time when drought and flooding are recurring problems, solutions for resilient river basins are crucial. As a consultancy firm with expertise in water policy and management, we therefore see the need for a comprehensive approach and the urgency of water security becoming increasingly apparent.

Water distress or water emergency?

What is the actual difference between 'water distress' and 'water emergencies'? In Flanders, where demand for water remains high due to population density and economic activities, both terms have a major impact on daily life:

  • Water distress results in water shortages, droughts and reductions in water supply, posing socio-economic challenges.
  • Water emergencies, the result of long periods of high rainfall (intensity), result in floods, damaged infrastructure and threats to people and the environment.

The nuances between these two situations highlight the challenges we face: both water shortage and flooding require a coordinated approach. The importance of resilient systems that adapt to different water challenges is increasing. At Antea Group, we strongly believe that understanding and applying resilience strategies and measures is essential for a better future for all

Strategy for resilience in Flanders

With increasing weather phenomena due to climate change, such as recent floods and prolonged droughts, a flexible, resilient approach to water management is vital. But what does resilience mean in this context? It means being able to cope with disturbances, such as floods and droughts, at the system level while maintaining essential structures and functions. Traditional methods of sustainability and water management are being given new meaning by the accelerated need for action and impact on society.

For instance, flood-prone areas need thoughtful solutions not only near the mouth but also from the source. Wetland restoration, forest expansion, erosion control and dynamic water level management are crucial in this, with implementing nature-based solutions as the leitmotif.
