To boost regional trade, the government of Algeria has decided to build a new commercial port at El Hamdania near Cherchell that will connect Algeria to other African nations, Europe, Southeast Asia and America. When complete, the port will process 6.5 million containers and 26 million tons of goods annually.

A joint venture led by Ramboll with Antea Group has been commissioned to produce the design, and oversee the building work on the port and the greater logistics area. As part of this contract, Ramboll-Antea Group are advising the Algerian government on different aspects of the project, ranging from the design to suitable solutions for the construction.

The objective of the analyses is to create the most favorable conditions for port construction work, taking into account the site’s exposure to the maritime climate, which includes the building of a new 4km breakwater.

Complete and integrated port design expertise

Various Antea Group teams are working on the project and are responsible for quality assurance, planning and risk management, as well as conducting analyses of sediment behaviour, environmental impact and port dimensioning. Other parties within the design team include LEM - bringing expertise in physical wave modelling in Algeria.

The project consolidates Ramboll’s position as one the leading global consultants offering complete port design services and draws on experts from the UK-led team as well as Denmark, Finland and India.
