Mandatory rainwater tanks, infiltration and depaving for a greener future

From 2 October 2023, the new Stormwater Regulation will come into force in Belgium. The basic principles remain unchanged, with an emphasis on pavement avoidance, reuse, infiltration and buffering. Major changes include the obligation to install rainwater tanks during renovations, the extension of infiltration and buffering obligations to paving and the introduction of a calculation tool for companies.
By early 2025, public property must also comply with the new regulation. The regulations encourage active depaving and infiltration, both for new projects and existing paving. Through targeted environmental action plans and cooperation with citizens and businesses, we can strive for a sustainable future with responsible water management.
