Duffel municipality is taking steps towards a sustainable future with the construction of a green-blue network on the Hondiuslaan, focusing on sustainable mobility and rainwater infiltration. Together with the sewerage works, where new stormwater and dirty water collectors will be installed, the existing cycle path will be renewed to meet the quality standards of the Vademecum Bicycle Facilities. In addition, special attention will be paid to rainwater infiltration to protect the region from drought and flooding in the future.

Improved cycling comfort

Cycling comfort will be significantly improved with the construction of the new cycle path, which is a welcome change for the neighbourhood with many daily cyclists, including schoolchildren and commuters. The cycle path will now be as much as four metres wide and surrounded by greenery. Cyclists are able to use the first phase of this infrastructure from Monday 18 September 2023.

Attention to stormwater infiltration

During the design phase, great care was also taken for rainwater infiltration, with greening along the roads by planting more than 80 new trees and constructing wadis. This increases water infiltration, helps cool the surrounding area and improves spatial quality.
