The government wants to encourage wastewater reuse. To this end, a number of financial obstacles in the legislation levies were removed. At the same time, by optimising sampling campaigns, among other things, it has better aligned wastewater charges with the ‘polluter pays’ principle.

In this environmental fact sheet, we explain which amendments from the implementing decree of the Water Code, published in the Official Gazette on 20 October 2023, are relevant when implementing wastewater measurement and sampling campaigns. We also zoom in on earlier provisions of the Flemish government, published on 6 October, through which it aims to promote the quality, production, supply and use of reclaimed water.
