Together towards the campus of the future

Questions? Let's get in touch.

Future-oriented master plans for KU Leuven

In 2008, KU Leuven drew up an initial long-term vision for the development of Arenberg. This was later updated to better align with the sustainability policies of the university and City of Leuven. The vision took into account the sustainability of buildings, mobility, energy, water, heritage and ecology. An innovative approach for the campus of tomorrow.

The assignment

Arenberg is a crucial link in the water management and biodiversity of the surrounding area. Its location makes it indispensable in warding off floods from the Demer Valley, protecting the open space and town. As a leading university, KU Leuven rolled out new master plans to align Campus and Science Park Arenberg with their vision of sustainability and that of the city "Leuven 2030".

The area had to become rainwater neutral and the buildings climate neutral. Finally, a green-blue connection had to be made with the nature reserve behind it. Campus and Arenberg Science Park were to evolve into a Living Campus, with a strong bicycle and pedestrian network and as few cars as possible. We focused mainly on water, ecology, landscape heritage and the realisation of public space and green infrastructure.

The solution

To answer KU Leuven's request, we cooperated on three plans:

  1. Global master plan for the Science Park together with KCAP, in which we focused on the green-blue network of the area, mobility solutions and energy management.
  2. Global master plan for Campus Arenberg together with BUUR, focusing on the themes of landscape, ecology and water.
  3. Master plans and design plans for public space together with OKRA for Campus Arenberg and for Science Park Arenberg, for which we are now also working on the realisation of the subprojects.

Together with our partners, we thus developed innovative, global master plans with quantified partial studies that served as the basis for the spatial translation. The focus was on balance and connection between nature and the buildings. The ambitious project for the campus of the future is currently in full development.

Future-oriented master plans for KU Leuven

With the new master plans, together with KU Leuven, we are facilitating a multidisciplinary area, where there will be room for cross-fertilisation between campus, science park and businesses
