Construction of multi-purpose pipeline between Desteldonk and Opwijk

Acceleration in Europe’s energy transition

Antea Group has delivered a remarkable achievement in record time with the construction of a multi-purpose pipeline between Ghent (Desteldonk) and Opwijk. This 44 km pipeline forms the missing link in the existing Zeebrugge-Eynatten route and enables the transport of natural gas and, in the future, hydrogen.

The assignment

Fluxys had an urgent need for a new pipeline between Ghent (Desteldonk) and Opwijk. This project was the missing link in the Zeebrugge-Eynatten route, which is essential for natural gas transport to, among others, Germany. Due to the geopolitical situation and Europe’s energy supply, the project had to be completed as quickly as possible. Antea Group was responsible for successfully completing the study from A to Z.

The solution

Antea Group completed the full study in just eight months, while such a large project normally takes 16 to 24 months. This accelerated process was crucial to safeguard the energy supply to Germany. A key part of the solution was the use of advanced drilling techniques, such as horizontal directional drilling for the crossings of the Dender and the Scheldt, and micro-tunnelling for the crossing of the E17 in Lokeren. These techniques minimised the impact on the environment and surroundings.

With a length of approximately 44 km, a nominal diameter of ND1000 and a maximum operating pressure of 84 bar, the pipeline was designed to transport not only natural gas, but also other products such as hydrogen. This supports the transition to sustainable energy sources, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and contributing to a greener future.

The result

  • 44 km pipeline
  • 9 municipalities crossed
  • 4 horizontal directional drillings

Partners and collaborations

Together with Fluxys (as client) and Denys (as contractor), we successfully completed this project. Internally, we combined our strengths across our different business units:

  • Infrastructure led the project and ensured engineering and coordination
  • Water carried out a thorough dewatering study
  • Urban Planning & Mobility focused on the EIA and biodiversity
  • Environment oversaw all environmental aspects
