Is climate change adaptation all about water? That was the theme of the Enabel conference on April 25-26 in Brussels. The aim of this year's conference was as follows: Stakeholders from different sectors exchange ideas and solutions to current climate issues together. Water is central to this. Alexander de Ruijter shared a little more about how we are already using our MVHRA tool today to map climate risks.

Climate risks mapped with the MVHRA

Colleague Alexander de Ruijter had the opportunity to explain our MVHRA tool at the Enabel conference. We already use this tool in several projects, including in Timor-Leste.  It serves to map climate risks and calculate their impact. Using concrete cases, Alexander showed how the tool can model 8 different climate hazards, including floods, erosion, drought, extreme heat, landslides and forest fires.

Based on those models, we can then quickly run scenarios for the different hazards. We use the results for adaptation planning, disaster management support, infrastructure planning and other measures to increase the resilience of local communities.

The MVHRA tool in action

In Timor-Leste, the MVHRA tool is already being used by the state secretariat to improve disaster prevention. Our goal is to provide countries with a platform to better understand the impacts of climate change on natural hazards. This is to create more resilient environments, both in urban and rural areas.
