Nature-Based Solution for large-scale soil contamination on SEVESO Site

Questions? Let's get in touch.

Innovative and sustainable groundwater remediation in a fragile forest area

In the heart of a protected forest area, on a SEVESO site, Antea Group addresses a complex groundwater contamination with an innovative and environmentally friendly approach. A SEVESO site is a location where hazardous substances are stored or processed. These sites fall under the European SEVESO directive, which imposes strict rules to protect people and the environment from major accidents. Thanks to a smart interplay between technology and nature, we minimize the impact on the ecosystem and ensure a safe and sustainable future.

The assignment

A confidential client engaged Antea Group for the remediation of severe contamination with solvents and explosives (RDX). The site is SEVESO-classified and located in a valuable forest area with protected flora such as wild hyacinths. The challenge: remediating an extensive plume of contaminated groundwater and surface water without disturbing the delicate ecosystem.

The solution

We opted for a partially Nature Based Solution, by creating a Constructed Wetland in the downstream forest area. Upstream, we address the core contamination through a combination of targeted excavations and injections with a carbon source, which stimulates the natural anaerobic degradation of the pollution.

The contaminated groundwater and surface water is collected further downstream and purified in the Constructed Wetland. This artificial yet naturally integrated water purification system is fully adapted to the existing terrain and vegetation of the forest. The result? Purified water that can be safely discharged into surface water, with minimal ecological impact. The limited energy supply is green and sustainable.

Partners and collaborations

This project was developed by Antea Group in cooperation with HMVT. The approach was established in close consultation with the client and several government authorities, including:

  • Direction de l’Assainissement des Sols (DAS)
  • Département Nature et Forêt (DNF)
  • ISSEP
  • Départements Eaux Souterraines et Eaux de Surface

Implementation is currently being carried out together with Envisan.
