Sustainable sludge drying using waste heat

Aquafin is currently building a brand‑new sludge dryer in Beringen that will process Flanders’ wastewater treatment sludge without the use of additional fossil fuels. Antea Group supported the entire tendering and permitting process for this innovative project.

The assignment

Aquafin aimed to replace three outdated sludge dryers in Houthalen, Leuven, and Deurne with two modern installations featuring a minimal ecological footprint.

Our scope included:

  • Guidance throughout the procurement procedure via the public “competitive dialogue” process
  • Preparation of the selection and award guidelines (specifications)
  • Preparation of the environmental permit application (environmental component)

The solution

Antea Group ensured a smooth and transparent procurement process, with innovation and sustainability as key principles. We worked closely with Aquafin to accurately translate environmental requirements and technical boundary conditions into the tender specifications.

Instead of using fossil fuels, the installation relies on residual heat from Bionerga to dry the sludge. The result is an energy‑efficient process without combustion or on‑site CO₂ emissions. Local residents also benefit: there are no concerns about noise or odors. The sludge is transported in sealed trucks, and the installation operates under negative pressure. The released air first passes through three scrubbers, then a biofilter, and finally an activated carbon filter.

Results

  • 0 fossil fuel used
  • +/- 100.000 tons dried wastewater treatment sludge per year

Partners and collaborations

This project is the result of close collaboration between Aquafin, Bionerga, and a study consortium that includes Antea Group Belgium. Aquafin is the client and supplier of the wastewater treatment sludge, Bionerga provides the residual heat, and Antea Group supported the procurement and permitting process.
