A future-proof industrial site, supported by an integrated approach

Air Liquide has been part of the industrial heart of Charleroi since the 1960s. The site has grown into a fixture in the region, both economically and socially. But even established operations must keep pace with the times. To ensure business continuity and comply with the latest environmental regulations, renewing the environmental permit was the next step. A complex process in which expertise, coordination, and transparency are essential.

The assignment

Renewing an environmental permit for a complex industrial site requires a thorough analysis of the potential effects on people and the environment. Air Liquide entrusted Antea Group with managing the entire permitting process, including the preparation of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and the required soil investigation.

As a certified EIA expert in category 5 for material processing operations and a certified soil specialist, Antea Group had all the expertise needed to carry out this assignment in full.

The solution

With a multidisciplinary team, we brought together all the required expertise. In this way, we ensured an efficient and careful execution of the entire process, with attention to both technical and societal aspects. In concrete terms, this included:

  • Active participation in the preliminary information meeting (RIP);
  • Clear and accurate responses to questions from local residents, which is essential to build support;
  • Intensive consultation with the Walloon authorities, including the noise department and the department for permits and authorizations;
  • Thorough preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), including concrete recommendations to further strengthen environmental management;
  • Execution of a preliminary soil investigation, carried out in parallel with the permitting process.

By combining these steps in a smart way, we built a coherent and robust file. Our integrated approach ensured not only efficiency, but also trust among all involved parties.

The result speaks for itself: at the first review, the file was immediately declared complete, a clear confirmation of the quality and thoroughness of our approach. This allowed the subsequent procedure, including the public consultation and the advice from the relevant authorities, to proceed without delay. In February 2026, the city of Charleroi granted the new environmental permit. Thanks to this successful renewal, Air Liquide can continue its operations in compliance with the most recent environmental regulations and with attention to sustainable environmental management.
