Sustainable bus stations for De Lijn in Flanders

Sustainable and efficient public transportation is a key pillar of future mobility. On behalf of De Lijn, Antea Group is redeveloping three strategic bus stations in Flanders: Maaseik, Tongeren, and Veurne. By combining modern infrastructure with sustainable solutions, we are creating transit hubs that meet the needs of passengers, bus drivers, and urban traffic. Veurne serves as the pilot project and is leading the way in smart mobility solutions.

The assignment

De Lijn aims to modernize its bus stations and make them future-ready. This includes improving bus traffic flow, ensuring safe and accessible stops, and upgrading infrastructure. The assignment involves:

  • Designing and detailing the bus stations, from concept to final design
  • Managing procurement and overseeing implementation
  • Integrating sustainable and innovative solutions in both mobility and infrastructure, such as sufficient tree cover on or near platforms for natural cooling on hot days

The solution

We designed smart bus stations that not only meet current needs but also anticipate future mobility challenges. Our approach includes:

Efficient and safe layout

  • Dedicated bus bays to ensure smooth flow without congestion
  • Optimized platforms and pedestrian routes for a safe and seamless experience

Sustainable infrastructure

  • Public green spaces and energy-efficient lighting
  • Use of durable, sustainable materials

Innovative water management

  • Local water buffering instead of connecting to the main sewer system
  • Eco-friendly restroom facilities

Partners and collaborations

For this project, we are working closely with architectural partner OSQB and coordinating with local governments and environmental experts.
